What is Male Breast Reduction?
Male Breast Reduction is a surgery which results in a more masculine chest.
What does the surgery entail?
An incision is made around the areola or under the arm. Excess tissue is removed
to give the appearance of a naturally smaller chest. This surgery is done under
general anesthesia so you will sleep through the entire procedure.
What are the benefits of Male Breast Reduction?
Male Breast Reduction improves the shape of the chest, decreases the mass of the
breast and corrects an asymmetrical chest. You should have a more masculine, contoured
chest.
Will there be any downtime?
Yes, this is a surgical procedure and requires some recovery time. You will need
to arrange for transportation to take you home and rest for several days.
What can be expected post-surgery?
You should expect some pain and fatigue, which varies from person to person. Some
swelling and bruising is not uncommon. Incision scars will be red at first and will
fade over time.
How soon will results appear?
Results should be visible as swelling diminishes. The final appearance of the chest
can take a couple of months to appear.
How long do the results last?
Results should be permanent. In order to achieve the desired results, it is recommended
that you do not have Male Breast Reduction surgery at the beginning of any weight
loss regimen.
Is Male Breast Reduction safe?
Male Breast Reduction is safe, although it does have a slight risk of complications
such as infection, excessive scarring, loss of sensation, asymmetry, blood clots,
wound separation and fluid loss or accumulation.
Are there any possible side effects?
Numbness, bruising and swelling are generally temporary. The risk of side effects
can be reduced by following your doctor’s advice and gently easing yourself back
into your normal routine.
What are the alternative treatments?
Liposuction offers a quick recovery time and may be an option depending on the consistency
of the tissue to be excised.
Is additional treatment necessary?
Additional treatment should not be necessary but can be performed in the case of
dissatisfaction or complications.
Instructions for before surgery:
The patient’s individual surgeon will provide specific instructions prior to surgery.
There will be guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking and medications to take and
avoid. Patients should make arrangements for someone to drive them home after the
surgery.
Instructions for after surgery:
You will need to rest, although after surgery you should get out of bed for short
periods of time. Sleep with your head and back elevated. If you show any signs of
infection, such as fever or bleeding, call your doctor. Your chest will be wrapped
in gauze for a few days. You will also have to wear an elastic support garment.
You should avoid lifting, bending or straining. After about a week, swelling and
bruising fades. Some patients are able to return to work at this point. You should
avoid vigorous exercise for at least a month.
